James Madison, graduate of Princeton and preparing for the ministry, was so shocked by . the mistreatment of Baptists and so moved by their preaching through prison bars that he abandoned the ministry and became the political apostle of religious freedom in Virginia and America. The Baptist church in Culpeper now is on the sitd of the old Culpeper jail. It was in this jail that James Ireland and others of like faith were imprisoned for preaching the gospel according to the dictates of their conscience. Note this and remember it: “Never once in their bitter, bloody history have they struck back at their persecutors, or persecuted any other for his faith. That is patriotism touched by the' divine.” • • ■
