James Madison, graduate of Princeton and preparing for the ministry, was so shocked by . the mistreatment of Baptists and so moved by their preaching through prison bars that he abandoned the ministry and became the political apostle of religious freedom in Virginia and America. The Baptist church in Culpeper now is on the sitd of the old Culpeper jail. It was in this jail that James Ireland and others of like faith were imprisoned for preaching the gospel according to the dictates of their conscience. Note this and remember it: “Never once in their bitter, bloody history have they struck back at their persecutors, or persecuted any other for his faith. That is patriotism touched by the' divine.” • • ■
"mersion, the word baptizo is a ' Greek word and means immersion. ■■ The ‘Greek church, old and knowing; the language, practices immersion only., “For 1300 years was baptism an immersion of the person under water.” This mode symbolizes the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. The* Lord’s Supper is an ordinance and symbolizes the death of Christ upon the Cross. In earlier times the Baptist practiced what was called “close Communion,” now the observance of the Lord’s Supper is left entirely with the individual Christian irrespective of denomination.
