Centennial Edition
The Sunday edition of the Richmond Times-Dispatch included • Centennial edition section, 'marking the paper’s 100th birthday. Along with the account of its own century mark, it listed many of the city’s and State’s 100-yearold businesses, including a story of our neighbor in Madison, the Clore Furniture manufacturers.
“J. C. Clore A Sons are carrying on an industry which has been handed down through the family for more than a hundred years. J. Carlton Clore and his sons, whose German-American ancestors settled in the Blue Ridge section of Western Virginia around 1726, are the manufacturers of Clore chairs, one of America’s most famous names in hand-made furniture.
“The first Clore chair was built in 1830 near what is now Madison by cabinet maker Michael Clore. Today the fourth generation of Clore craftsmen are cutting Virginia black walnut, wild cherry, and iwhite oak to be- hand finished and made into chairs.”
