as Baptists believe in individual responsibility. The first Sunday school in America, dealing strictly in religious education, was founded at the First Baptist church at Philadelphia in 1815. The first Sunday school paper for young people in the United States, the Young Reaper, iwas a Baptist production. So were the International Uniform Sunday school Lessions, which were the work of a Chicago layman, B. F. Jacobs. The first modern missionary, William Cary, was a Baptist. In 1812 Adoniram Judson and Luther Rice were on their way to Calcutta. In Calcutta they became Baptists and Rice returned home to tell the Baptists about it and gain their support. He toured the country, poking the old fires of neglected missionary passion. He had it good story and he knew how to tell it. The Baptists backed him, and sent him back to Calcutta to tell Judson to go ahead. He stirred up and created missionary societies and gave the Baptists a common cause.

The Baptists in the United States met in a convention every three years, hence it was called the “Triennial Convention.” Much good came out of this; not only a foreign mission society,-hut one for home missions, too, a Baptist -publication society, and American Baptist historical society, and educational society, aira a young people's union.
