(The following address was delivered by G. Tyler Miller to the teachers of Rappahannock and Warren counties on Thursday, August 30, on the occasion of the District Teachers' Meeting.)
Today, our Nation faces and will continue to face for a long period of time problems so serious that they threaten the termination of our American way of life and the loss of the freedoms we have so long cherished and enjoyed. All thoughtful citizens are concerned because of the uncertainty and tension during this period of mobilization for national defense. The times are indeed ominous and never before as a nation have we faced such stresses and strains.
There is disunity in our land and among our national leaders when our very survival as free men and women demands unity of purpose and action. Corruption, graft, dishonesty and political chicanery have become prevalent among some men in high position who fail to regard public office as a public trust.
Even some of our education institutions, with halhxwyi traditions of honor and service to our, country, have become involved in questionable practices growing out of over-emphasis on athletics, unwise or ineffective instructional practices, and failure to develop in the individual student a personal code of honor. As citizens and as educators, we are concerned about the welfare of our country and its institutions. The recent scandal occasioned by the wholesale cheating of certain students at an institution like West Point, on top of the previous revelations* of deplorable corruption at some of our other educational institutions of national prominence as a result of gambling on college basketball games, comes as a disturbing shock to all good citizens.
