commend to you' these four particular obligations or duties of good citizenship because I sincerely believe that only through intelligent thinking, hard work, respect for others, and the exercise of the voting -privilege can we practice democracy in our everyday living whereby we can expect to preserve in a changing world those values inherent in our form of democracy.
Finally, I would like to leave with you s e v e r a.l additional thoughts about the profession of teaching and twith them I shall conclude my talk.
1. Teachers themselves must develop a zeal and enthusiasm for teaching in order to raise the prestige of teaching and secure the respect of young people for teaching as a profession.
2. Teachers must have a proper pride in their profession if they expect others to regard it highly. They should indicate by word and by action that they have no regrets about becoming teachers, or else they must expect others to consider teaching a mediocre or a “.second-rate” occupation.
3. Teachers must continuously exert conscientious and earnest effort, and through dynamic leadership should influence young persons of superior ability to become teachers. , .
the teacher supply is undoubtedly the monetary reward; however, there are many satisfactions in teaching which cannot be measured in _ financial returns. These should not be overlooked when considering the advantages of teaching as a profession. Some of these satisfactions were mentioned in an editorial of the October 15147 issue of the Virginia Journal of Education, which I quote:
“Because once a reasonable amount of security is provided, teachers are highly privileged. They live in an atomaphere which stimulates the mind and enlarges the spirit: The gratification that cornea to them from knowing the contribution that they are making toward enabling omen to live rich, full lives is great Thein is the greatest opportunity, with the possible exception of the ministry, to raise our culture and our civilization!”
