There was a little cool spell last week, but we all recognized it. ’Twas that old cool spell that arrives just before the opening of school to get your mind set that fall is arriving and it’s time to get back to school-books. Then, just wait; as soon as the opening of school arrives, it gets hotter'n the regions beyond the Styx, and the poor children and teachers march off to the schools to sweat and labor. The children must endure the drowsiness of being cooped up in a hot room, after a summer of freedom and’ outdoors; they-ve got to stay dressed up all day and wear shoes; it is certain that many a hot day they will gladly give up in disgust— if they were allowed to— and resolve to grow up in ignorance, school just ain’t worth itl The teachers try—and they, too, have had a restful summer and are adjusting themselves to harness—to get something, pounded into the children’s 'heads. The children aren’t hard to please: they want a three-ring ciurcus all day long, and nuke- rt a good one. The children are willing to learn; that is, provided the teacher will hand it out in nice, pleasing, cheerful doses. Otherwise, the kids are going to sit like sweet little bumpson-a-log and stupidly gase at space; it’s too hot for them to jut out extra effort

Now, any fellow who would paj food money to advertise in thii day and time and state that tfas job carried no pay, ie certainly an optimist. Someone has comawuted that the only way tin man could g«t ‘ housekeeper and ••ok, with no salary offered, — to aeeomnaav the job
