Former-President Herbert Hoover, at the Iowa State Fair, recently stated his views on our country’s dangers, (with emphasis on the moral decay and the lack of a sense of obligation among our government officials.
Locally, G. Tyler Miller, president of Madison college, voiced some of these same sentiments recently in addressing the teachers of Warren and Rappahannock counties.
Farmers in Rappahannock, and many other counties, became suspicious of a review being sent out by the agriculture department and expressed themselves accordingly.
These opinions, frankly and openly voicing the short-comings of the government, are not cause for an expression of regret that they were spoken; the shame is that our ex-president, a college president, and the farmers think it necessary to speak. The fact that the evils exist is the shame of our nation. It is a disgrace that our country has reached the place where such criticism, can come from so many places at once.
There have been always a certain number of evils existing. The government is humanly conceived and humanly executed, and that means a certain amount of error. It is not the error which concerns. Binr Harrison once stated that he had made mistakes but they had been mistakes of the head, never of the heart. In that case we have no fear. A few errors of the head are with all of us, but as long as we constantly strive toward the good and proper, there is no need for fear.
These open criticisms of the government are condemning the errors of ijie heart—where there is moral decay among citizens who feel no obligation toward their fellowpian in administering the government for the good of all.
