226 Enroll in High School
For Opening of Session
, A high school enrollment of 226 was noted for the opening of Rappahannock County High |School for the session of 195152 Enrollment by grades (Was: 8th grade, 64; freshmen 71; sophomores 40; juniors 31; and seniors 20. Several more students are expected in the high school in various grades, and Principal H. B. Winfrey stated there were fewer drop-otits than had been anticipated.
Reports showed 133 pupils enrolled in the first four grades at Washington. Reports could not be obtained this early in the session from all the other schools in the county.
In the county high school, Miss 'Dorothy Bland from Shangai, Virginia, is the new commercial teacher. The faculty, otherwise, is the same as that of last year: H. B. Winfrey, principal; Mrs. M. H. Winfrey, Mrs. Fisher Burford, Mrs. Hazel Corbin, Mrs. Pauline Bruce, Mrs. Anne Menefee, C. 0. Calhoun, Mrs. Beth Johnson, Richard Beck, Miss Charlotte Golladay. The grade teachers at Washington are Mrs. Louise M. Price, Mrs. Jessie Cox, Mrs. Lavinia Barron, and Miss Mary Jenldns.
Mrs. C. 0. Calhoun is the school secretary. T Some much-needed improvements to the building were made during the summer months, including the laying of a new floor in the front and rear halls, additioal bookcases in the library, a protective tarpaulin for the stage curtain purchased last year, arid screen windows and doors for the lunch room.
Willis Burke, school janitor, has kept the buildings and grounds in good shape during the summer months. In addition, he spent several days in Flint Hill ad Sperryville helping to get the grounds at those schools ready for fall opening.
