Although we may not prohibit our children from fighting, we do want them to realise that most difficulties can be settled without recourse to fighting. Sometimes we can act as arbiter in a situation in which one person feels he is not being treated fairly. (But let us guard against making “tattle-tales” out of our children.
We can suggest compromises that may be made. We can emphasize good sports-manship and the importance of taking turns. We can 'help them realize that sometimes those who harm them do so because they do not know any better, or because they have never had a chance to learn how to get along.with others. With these, let them experiment in returning good for evil and note the effect it has on the other fellow.
Note that whereas not fighting because of fear indicates weakness of character, refusing to fight because of a desire to settle a dispute more intelligently indicates strength.
