Because you and I and the many thousands of others engaged in the profession of teaching, on account of these very conditions and the ever-menacing threat of communism face a more serious challenge and a greater opportunity than that faced by any previous generation of educators. I am convinced that now and in the years ahead to a large degree the future of our way of life and the very distiny of our country will depend upon how effectively the teachers of, America meet their responsibilities to children and youth in the classrooms of our public schools, colleges, and universities.
Roy E. Larsen, publisher of Time and Life magazines, who, as chairman of the National Citizens’ Commission for Schools, is contributing greatly to the awakening of American communities to the problems and needs of the schools, emphasizes the role of public education as a bulwark of democracy. He stated the case appropriately in an address which he delivered in Cleveland, Ohio, in June. I quote a thoughtevoking and pertinent paragraph from this^address:
