Back in early 1332, when a dollar was worth 100 cents, the national debt was considerably under $ 20-billion. Then came Mr. Roosevelt and the New Deal with the statement that first efforts would! be to “balance the budget."

That was probably the sorriest prediction of all time.

The first 37 pages of our New Deal history book brings us to January, 1934, with Roosevelt announcing that he “hoped” to balance the budget by June, 1935.

Thirty-five pages further finds Mr. Roosevelt saying that by June 30, 1936, the national debt might stand at over 334-billion. Not a word was said about balancing the budget.

And the New Deal and Fair Deal spenders have rolled merrily along. The expression “balancing the budget” is now very much old
