This is one of the most important and critical periods of the whole spraying season. While the time for applying the dormant and delayed dormant sprays is past, a statement regarding these sprays may be of some value in planning the 1953 spray program. The dormant and delayed dormant sprays for apples are designed primarily to control scale insects and rosy aphis. Inasmuch as spray materials are now available, which are used in the later sprays, with which satisfactory control of scale and rosy aphis may be controlled in the early cover sprays, gowers may well give consideration to omitting the dormant and delayed sprays except in orchards where there is present a medium to heavy infestation of scale. The next few weeks, considering weather predictions, will be favorable for the development and spread of apple scab and rust diseases. Scab and rust control is becoming more serious because Virginia is increasing her production of Red Delicious and other varieties that are especially susceptible to scab and rust infection.
The pre-pink spray is one of-fhe most important sprays for scab control on these varieties. From the standpoint of economy and effectiveness, liquid lime sulfur at the rate of six quarts or six pounds of dry lime sulfur in one hundred gallons is recommended for this spray.
