It has not l>eeti so mar y years »Ro that apple growers suffered losses running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars each year liecause of the large quantity of apples that dropped op the ground before they were harvested. With production costs increasing and greater consumer demand for higher quality fruit, one of the big problems of the apple industry was to find some way of holding the fruit on the trees until it could lie picked. The discovery of hormone sprays, or stop-drop sprays, as they are commonly called, to prevent pre-harvest dropping of apples has made it possible to reduce losses from dropping to a fraction of what they were before stop-drop spray materials were available. These sprays make it possible to harvest fruit at a, better state of maturity and to secure higher color, all of which means improvement in quality which is so necessary in meeting present-day competition.
From the statements that have lieen made in this article it is very evident that tremendous progress has been made in meeting the spray material needs of the fruit industry for effective and efficient insect and disease situation that may develop.
