Fifth Cover Spray
This spray is applied primarily for protection against leaf roller and Japanese beetles. Correct timing of this spray is important and depends upon- the time when the worms of the second brood leaf roller become active. Use one and one-half pounds of a 50 per cent Rhothane powder in one hundred gallons plus one and one-half pounds of Ferbatn dr 2-4100 if a fungicide is needed. It is advisable to add a spreader if Ferbam is used in this spray.
Sixth Cover Spray
This has often been on of the most important insect sprays in the whole spray program. It is an important spray for Bitter Rot, Black Rot, and Blotch. For the insecticide use two pounds of 50 per cent or one and one-thirds of a 75 per cent dry wettable DDT powder in one hundred gallons for the control of codling moth, Japanese beetle, and caterpillars, plus one and one-half pounds of Ferbatn or 2-4-100 Bordeaux mixture- If Ferbam is used, a spreader should be added to prevent spotting.
As mentioned previously, the spray is general, and it may be necessary to vary or change it to meet the insect and disease situation in the individual orchards. Elevation, slope, and exposure all have an influence on insect and disease behaviour activity and should be given careful consideration in planning the spray program and in timing and applying the sprays.
