Ceramics Workshop

The second meeting of the Ceramics Workshop sponsored by the Arts and Crafts Project was held Tuesday at the L. J. Kilby lake near Sperryville with 9 of the original 12 ladies present. On May 25, the first day of class, Mr. Joseph Carter, instructor, showed by demonstration and lecture how to work up local clay into the right condition for making pottery. Many tricks at the potter’s trade were demonstrated for producing jar, pitchers and bowls. Mr. Carter has been an instructor at the Corcoran Art Gallery studio. He supervised the class as they practiced “wedging” clay into a pliant medium for shaping objects. At the second lesson Mr. Carter showed some of these objects that were made on the first day which he had fired during the week. The class was amazed at the different colors produced by firing different clays. At this meeting the members made a variety of things and sun baked them in preparation forfuture meetings. Other steps will be firing, decorating and glazing. This Workshop will continue meeting each Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Kilby Lake for the next two or three weeks. People are welcome to join the group.
