Virginia Trade School at Petersburg, he attended Virginia State College and Virginia Seminary, later serving in the armed forces for 3 1/2 years. Mr. Smith is Pastor of the North New Hope Baptist Church at Danville, works as a barber in Chatham, and assists his father in operating a Pittsylvania County farm which produces fluecured tobacco, corn, and hay. He is a member of the Masonic Lodge. Lloyd Sykes was born and reared in Southampton County, where he attended public school. After 2 years’ active service in the U. S. Navy, Mr. Sykes attended Elizabeth City (N. C.) Teachers’ College, where he was a member of the Sigma Rho Honor Society, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. Laber he received a Master of Education Degree in Upper Elementary Education and Administration from New York University in New York City. For the past 4 years, Mr. Sykes has been principal of the Drewryville District School, having previously served for 11 years as head teacher of the Drewryville Elementary School. In addition to his duties in the county school system, Mr. Sykes owns and operates farms in the area. He is a member of the National Education Association, the Virginia Teachers’ Association, and the Southampton County Teachers’ Association, and is active in several civic and fraternal organizations. He is a steward in the Wayman A. M. E. Church.
