ossu remain prove that members of the horse family roamed the plains of America, especially what is now the Gr^at Plains area of the U. S. beginning about 58,000,000 years ago. Yet no horses were present on this continent when Columbus discovered America in 1492. Why they perished only a few thousand years before, is still one of the unexplained mysteries of evolution.
The horse was probably the last of the present-day farm animals to be domesticated by man. According to early records, after subduing the ox, the sheep, and the goat, man domesticated the ass and then the camel, finally the horse became his servant. Horses appear to have been domesticated first in Central Asia or Persia more than 3,000 years before Christ. It seems incredible that all the various breeds, colors, and types of horses should have descended from t common, wild ancestor. Rather, there were probably many different wild stocks giving descent to domestic horses.
