The Story of
The Horse
It’s been many years since the advent of the first automobiles gave rise to that famous cry -- “Get a horse!" But at this date many people are heeding that cry — the horse is enjoying a revival. At their height, in 1915, there were 21,431,000 horses in this country, most of them draft animals. Mules reached a peak in 1925 at 5,918,000 head. With the coming of the machine age -- the automobile, truck, and tractor -- the draft horse and mule declined in numbers. Today, however, the horse is rising to a happier position and is contributing to the fields of recreation and sport. Further expansion in light horses appears inevitible, says Arden Huff of the animal science department at VPI. (The’ light horse is a king of equine compact!) The story of the horse covers a period of about 58,000,000 years. Man hunted him as recently as 25,000 years ago, domesticated him a mere 5,000 years ago, and returned him to the new world less than 500 years ago.
