This can prevent temperature build ups (sometimes they reach 140 degrees) even where other types of air conditioning or air cooling systems are used. Automatically controlled, this type of fan has a thermostat that is generally set to cut the fan on at 95 degrees and off at 85 degrees. Installation costs will probably run around $75 for a 3000 cubic foot per minute fan for the average home. Operating costs will run about four cents a day, says Lambert. “You’ll be disappointed in this arrangement, though, if you like the effects of air movement in your living quarters,” he explains. Most commonly used method of gaining heat relief, however, is probably window fans, the engineer believes. Placed in windows, they are turned on in the late afternoon or evening when it’s cooler outside than it is inside. Other windows not containing fans are barely opened and the fans pull the cooler air through the living quarters. These are the simplest to install and they provide positive cross ventilation in one or more rooms, says Lambert, They are normally controlled manually. Initial cost depends on the type fan purchased. Operating costs will probably not exceed two cents a day. “Although this arrangement will not cool the attic, it does offer a positive feeling of air movement,” says Lambert. New York, N.Y. - The high accident rate among older Americans could be cut through improved strategic : lighting in the home, the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness, Inc. said here today in a Senior Citizens Month message.
The combination of agedeyes and inadequate illumination is a significant factor in accidental falls that kill more than 10,000 elderly persons each year. John W. Ferree, M.D. executive director of the national health agency reported. May has been proclaimed as Senior Citizens Month by President Johnson.
“A person in his sixties needs about two and one-half times more light than a 20year-old,” said Dr. Ferree. “In most cases as we get older, we do get brighter reading lights but neglect other areas of the home vital to continued safe living.”
Dr. Ferree cited a report pre sented at the 1965 annual conference of the National Society showing the accidental death rate per 100,000 population climbs from 55 among young adults to 90 in the 65-74 year
