Price Outlook
(This is the way prospects for Virginia farm prices looked to the Virginia Dept, of Agriculture on Friday. The Department offers it to one can predict prices and he right farmers with the warning that no all the time.) The cattle market is expected to continue strong with some price improvement likely. Cattle slaughter for the next few weeks is expected to run 4 to 5 per cent less than for the same period last year, based on the April 1 Cattle on Feed Report. Compared to a year earlier, this report shows that there were 13 per cent less cattle on feed in the 900 - 1099 pound weight group, and 2 per cent fewer in the 700 - 899 weight group. The report also indicated that the only cattle showing increases over 1964 were those weighing under 700 pounds -- light weights under 500pounds were up 8 per cent, and those weighing 500 - 699 pounds were up 11 per cent. In Chicago last week choice grade steers for slaughter brought $26.50 - $29.00 and good steers were $23.50 - $26.00. Choice grade heifers sold at $25.50 - $27.50, and good heifers brought $22.00 - $25.25. Cattle moving through Virginia auctions last week brought these prices; choice steers $24.00 - $26.00 and good steers $22.2% - $24.00. Good heifers brought $18.50 - $20.75.
