Although no one has ever attempted a count, there are probably 10,000 of these family campsites scattered through Virginia and available for your use. What does it cost; The usual fee for overnight camping for a family unit runs around $2 to $2.50. One reason camping has grown so rapidly in popularity is that people have discovered they no longer need to rough it when they go camping. In fact, with today’s low cost and well engineered camping equipment, you can be nearly as comfortable in camping as in vour own home.
The fundamentals for a fam ily of four are a tent or camp trailer, sleeping bags, folding cots or air mattresses, three or four folding chairs, a gasoline lantern, and a gasoline stove. This entire basic unit will cost you no more than $100 to $150 if you shop carefully. Of course, if you can afford it and are carried away, you could spend $1,000 or more for the same basic unit. There are few states in the union that match V i r g i n i a’6 variety of camping opportunities,. You mav wish to travel to Virginia Beach and camp on the ocean shore at Seashore State Park, or you may wish to travel the Skyline Drive and camp in Shenandoah National Park. Virginia’6 famous Fairy Stone State Park may appeal to you. Or, if you primarily want to fish and camp, the several camp-i grounds at the Kerr Reservoir may be the answer. These, and many other exciting camping locations, await the adventurous family who wishes to see more of Virginia outdoors.
