Activity in |lippahannock has
begun to resume a normal pace after the weekend blizzard the last of January. Removal of the snow from the counties highways and secondary roads will cost an estimated $20,000 to $25,000 according to D. S. Butler, Resident Engineer. Schools opened here Monday for the first classes in two weeks, and all buses were able to make their appointed trips. School officials said that attendance has been good this week. A highway spokesman said Tuesday that all roads here were open by late afternoon Thursday and highway crews worked all day Saturday and Sunday pushing back drifts in an effort to widen roads. Though all were open, many of them had been one lane with occasional scooped out places where two vehicles could meet./ All things considered, the Highway Department did a splendid job of digging out and cleaning up the county, assisted by individuals and private equipment. Thursday morning an Army helicopter made a drop ,of supplies to two families in a hollow near Sperryville just as the mountain road was .opened with a front end loader. The request for supplies had been made earlier and bright colored blankets laid out in the snow to mark the area for the drop. The terrain here was not suitable for a copter landing.
The storm was costly to the county as a whole and to individuals as well, but this area was not as hard hit as many other places nearby.
