charged with the responsibility to make sure the foods you and I eat and the drugs you and I use are safe. It’s a tremendous responsibility, guarding the food and drugs of almost 200 million people. Yet, there's little doubt that they are quite effective in discharging this responsibility. It's seldom that we have cases where unsafe food or drugs cause illness or damage to prevent. Oh, there are scattered cases, more than we like because we want none. However, when such a case does occur, it’s accompanied by tremendous publicity, proof in itself of how unusual it is. The FDA’s success in safeguarding our health is also pointed up by our confidence in the foods and drugs we buy. We buy our food, we will prescriptions and buy drugs without question. Based on our past experience, we simply assume their safety and value and buy accordingly. This confidence is, in itself, a great thing. There are few places in the world where the same sort of confidence exists. In most places, you • continuously have in the back erf yoqr mind the question, “Is this food or drug really safe to use? Should I be careful?"

Then, we go back to how much this costs..$50 million a, year. It sounds like a lot of money and it is. Yet, when you break this down and figure out how much it costs for each of us . . you and me and almost 200 million.others like us . . it looks different. If you figure it in this way. the cost of this protection runs a little over 25 cents a year. To me, this is a real bargain in safety. For only 25 cents, we get assurances that
