Constitution, - “now all thirteen clocks will strike together”. 0 One of the. most interesting events of American history was the westward march which soon began after the* first settlements, and continued with more territory brought under the American Flag. The slowest but first stage of the move in colonial days carried the frontier westward to the Appalachian foothills. More rapidly the second began when the French were drawn from the western country; the third carried our frontier across the Great Plains out over the Rocky mountains to the-Pacific Ocean.
The Louisiana Purchase during the Lewis and Clark Expedition was the making of our modern country. Without this and other important events there would never have been anything like the present United States of America today. For the first time this Expedition told America what it had acquired by its great Purchase, and suchanachieve ment it was. After the Expedition came settlers, cattlemen, trappers, farmers, traders and soldiers. One of the most beloved and outstanding of American presidents was Abraham Lincoln, our sixteenth president whose Proclamation of Emancipation made the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States thus banning slavery forever from the United States or any of its possessions. Lincoln’s courage and resolution saved the Union and kept the United States a single nation. Robert E. Lee was the greatest of Confederate heroes, and the North as well as the South admired him. He accepted defeat quietly, without anger or bifteiTiess when he surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant of the Union Army in the McLean house at Appomattox, bringing the War Between the States to
