Charolais Crosses, Adapted Crop Varieties and Legal Planning are the topics to be covered Wednesday night, Februay 16th at the third session of the Rappahannock Extension School to be held at Rappahannock High School.
All topics were selected upon popular requests and the best qualified speakers available will be on hand as discussion leaders.
Curtis Mast, Extension Livestock Specialist, VPI, known, respcted and well liked by cattlemen throughout the Old Dominion, will lead the discussion on “Charolais Crosses.”
Already local farmers have indicated they will expect him to answer pertinent questions about performance (growth rates, carcass evaluation, feed conversion, etc.) of 1st and 2nd crosses. 'Whether calving problems are to be expected or not?
Reports of local breeders, performance testing -results and the recent purchase of a Charolais bull by a local breeder from Dhio, which had a phenominal index of 191 points has fired curiosity among local cattlemen wanting to know more about this breed of French cattle.
Bob Harrison, Seed Specialist VPI. will cover “Adapted Varieties, Why Use Them.” Many feel this is a primary weakness in the county’s crop production program. Others say no. this can have only minor effects on yields, TDN costs per acre, etc. Then, too, with so many corn hybrids on the market many farmers ‘want research facts; performance data from different stations having climatic conditions similar to those in Rappahannock.
“Corn soils being extremely limited in the county emphasizes the need of our getting the most economical yields possible—can selection of known varieties help bring this about?" Hear George.
T. Carlyle Lea. Judge and Attorne.v-at-Law, will advise fanners and others on “Legal Planning” to include: Wills, Contracts, Liability, Commercial Code.
