Blacksburg, Va.—WhenVir-. ginia Tech wag forced to cancel Its classes last Monday, old timers around the university tried to recall the last time such a thing was done because of the weather and couldn't. Tradition has it that such an event has occurred only once previously in the, 93year history of Virginia Tech. A severe cold wave in the late 19th Century had caused a coal shortage on campus and the school authorities had to call off classes for a day. However, the students, instead of staying in their dormitory rooms, were enlisted in mining and hauling coal at one of Tech’s nearby coal mines. Enough coal was hauled to keep the buildings heated and the students returned to classes the next day, so the story goes.
