Our dollar was adapted in 1785 from the Spanish dollar, wnich had been widely used in the colonies. This dollar was often cut into 8 pieces (pieces of eight) with each piece or “bit* being worth 12 1/2 cents. Thus, “two-bits“ was really a quarter.
