Virginia ranked third in the nation in number of acres plant ed to forest tree seedlings on a privately-owned land during 1965. State Forester G. W. Dean, in making this announce ment, said that Virginia was also third in forest tree seedling production. The two Division of Forestry nurseries produced and shipped over 42,000,000 trees last year. Virginia ran among the lead ers, 7th in the nation, in number of acres direct seeded. Dean explained that direct seeding means sowing tree seed that has been treated with rodent and bird repellents. This is a relatively new technique made possible with the development of repellent chem icals that can withstand the weather until the seeds germinate. Untreated seed is part of the diet of many wild creatures. To sow enough untreated seed to satisfy the mice and birds and expect to have enough left over to grow a stand of trees would be impractical from the cost stand point alone.
