William C. Vernam, Forester for Rappahannock County, reports that even though it appears that spring is a long way off with the recent heavy snowfall, landowners should be thinking about and planning For spring reforestation projects. March planting season will be here sooner than one expects and landowners planning to plant trees this spring should contact him in Warrenton or Chief Forest Warden Raymond M. Johnson in Woodville so that they may obtain free planting assistance from the Virginia Division of Forestry. Free planting site examinations are available from the Division of Forestry. These examinations consist of looking at the proposed planting area and the m,aking of recommendations for planting as to the best method of setting the trees, desirable species to plant, spacing and number of trees to plant per acre. Assistance is also given in ordering trees from the state forest tree nurseries. Loblolly pine, white pine, shortleaf pine, Virginia pine, yellow poplar, white ash and green ash seedlings may be obtained at a cost of $5.50 to $9.50 per thousand trees delivered to the planting site. About 800 trees will plant an acre of open land.
Plan now to reforest idle and cutover land for future timber crops, conservation of soil and water and forwildlifefood and cover.
