She said there’s no way of telling just how many widows might be eligible for payments at 60 because this is a “choice* on the part of each individual widow. Just as the law allows workers and wives to choose payments at age 62 (instead of 65) at reduced amounts, the new law now permits widows to take reduced benefits at the age of 60 (instead of 62). This is a choice that each widow has to make for herself. If she decides to take the payments at 60, the month ly amount will be about 15% less. The reduction is not that much for persons closer to age 62.
