Navy, was awarded the i Staff Medal First Class by the ; South Vietnamese government j for advice and assistance! given to the South Vietnamese ' Navy during 1966, while serv- : ing with the U. S. Naval Ad- | visory Group in Saigon. Captain Holschuh* s duties included providing support to ! the combined U. S. and Viet-: namese Navy patrols of both I the coastal waters and the; major rivers of South Viet- ■ nam. The coastal patrols sue- | cessfully intercepted two major shiploads of rifles, machine guns, mortars, and am- 1 munition from North Vietnam and Communist China before they could be delivered to the Viet Cong, The river patrols successfully turned back several Viet Cong attempts to move troops across this Mekong River, and prevented Viet Cong efforts to extort money or supplies from innocent Vietnamese civilians traveling the rivers of the Mekong Delta.
