THE ANGEL As It in a winter's night, stood shivering in the snow, Surprised I was with a sudden heat that made my heaTt to glow: And lifting up a scary eye to see what fire was near, A loving angel from Heaven did in the air appear, Who scorched with a burning heat and floods of tears did shed, As though these floods should ston the flames, but they with Hi* tears were fed. His faultless head the furnace was, the fuel killing thorns; Love was the fire and pauses the smoke, the ashes shame and scorns. The final Justice then lay on, and Mercy blew out the coals; The metals in this furnace were from men’s sinful souls. “For now on fire am I to work them to their good; So will I melt into a bath to wash them in my blood." With that He vanished out of sight, and swiftly shrank away But he left me warmed and filled with light as brilliant as the day. —Earl Yancy, senior
