May the 13th the Navy Nurse ?,orps celebrates fifty-nine1 /ears of service to this coun:ry. The Nurse Corps’ contriDution to our national defense ind the service they have rendered to both servicemen and civilians at home and abroad, are of profound significance.
Since its establishment by Congress on May 13th, 1908 he Navy Nurse Corps growth tnd development has been rapid and impressive. During World War II the 'Sacred Twenty”, as the corps was first referred, swelled to over 11,000 members. These nurses staffed 17d dispensaries and 12 hospital ships. In 1953 three hospital ships, the Consolation, Repose, and Haven were rotated as station hospitals off the coast of Korea Navy nurses were the first women ever assigned to combatant ships, when in 1961, the Navy sent two aircraft carriers to provide aid and assistance to the “Texas Hur ricane Relief Mission,” with nurses embarked. Since February 1963, Navy nurses have been stationed at various med ical centers in Viet Nam, including the newly commission ed hospital ship, Repose, with its staff of twenty-nine nurses Congratulations to these hard working, dedicated men and women of the Navy Nurse Corps on your 59th birthday.
