Measles Eradication
The State Department of Health has received $209,430 in federal funds for an immu nization project whose purposes include the eradication measles in Virginia this year. State Health Commissioner, Mack I. Shanholtz said the pro ject will develop a statewide program to inform all parents of newborn children of the availability and importance of immunizations for infants in the first year of life. Other diseases included in the immunization project include smallpox, diphtheria whooping cough, tetanus and polio. The project will make info* mation and promotional s u pport available to local health departments, and assist them in creating public awareness of immunological needs in the community, Dr. Shanholtz said Sampling techniques will be used to determine the number of immunized persons within a given population.
The project will be conducted by the Department’s Division of Speical Health Services. Dr. Paul C. White Jr., epidemiologist, will be medical director for the project.
