Urethane foam - what is it? Urethane foam is a material that you are going to see more of on the labels of furniture. It is being used in many cases in the place of wood in furniture, but it is unlikely that this will ever completely replace :he woods. This man-made material does have many advantages over wood, these being that it is: lightweight, easy to mold and form, stronger than wood, age resistant, not subject to temperature changes and has excellent adhesion to metal, wood, masonry, glass or fabrics when foamed "in place. Urethane foam does have many possibilities, but there is also one big disadvantage - in the wrong hands it can be horribly cheap ened so, as you shop for furniture, be on the lookout that beautiful “wood* may be another man-made product. Speaking of furniture - rattan and wicker are not the same! Rattan is a palm stem often 1 used to create wickerwork. Wicker is the term for pliible strands of material woven into chairs, tables, baskets, ;tc.
