Since licensing of the measles vaccine in 1963, the number of reported cases in the United States dropped from 385,000 that year to 266,000 reported in 1965, Public Health Service data indicate that with a concerted national effort, the disease can be eradicated by the end of this year. Public health agencies throughout the United States have joined in the effort to stamp out measles. “Measles is often the most miserable disease a child experiences,* Dr. Shanholtz stated. “There are complications in about one of every six cases.
“Public Health Service statistics show that in about one of every 1,000 cases, a child i develops encephalitis, often called sleeping sickness or brain fever. Pncephalltis frequently leaves children with permanent disabilities, including mental retardation, ■’deafness and blindness.* The State Health Department recommends that every infant be vaccinated against measles when he is-about a year old. Immunization is considered especially important for chlk dren exposed to groups in nurseries, kindergartens, first and second grades, church schools and Head Start programs, because of the high risk of infection in these groups.
