The Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries ap proved an early western bear season beginning November 13 and ending December 23 at their meeting in Richmond May 5. A proposal for a 2 week early turkey season in Eastern Virginia was defeated because of widespread hunter and landowner objections. Counties east of the Blue Ridge will have the same bear season, November 20 through January 5, that they had last year and the same November 20 through December 2 turkey season. The western turkey season also remained the same opening November 6 and closing December 16. Some significant changes were made in anterless deer shooting, but Eastern and West ern deer season lengths remained unchanged. One ante* less deer will be permitted in most Northern Neck Counties for the first two weeks of the season instead of only on open ing day as was the case last season. King William, Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex Counties which shot bucks only last season were added to this group. One antherless deer would be permitted for the entire season in Northumberland and Lancaster Counties. The portion of the Dismal Swamp Area, with its October 1-November 30 Legisl a t i v e season, was restricted to bucks only shooting during the coming season. Fluvanna County was moved into the Northern Virginia group which will shoot antlerless deer on opening day of the season but retained its 2 deer bag limit. Pulaski, Wythe, Bland, Tazewell, Smyth, Washington, Rus sell, Dickenson, Scott, Lee and Southern Wise Counties in Southwest Virginia will shoot only bucks during their regular 2 week season.
