Annual inspections will be required for bridges on primary route extensions within Virginia cities and towns of 3,500 population or more, under a new policy announced today by the State Highway Department. Local officials in 63 communities around the State have been asked to submit the first bridge inspection reports to the Department by July 1, and to provide such reports by that same date in future years. The policy is the same as that followed by the Department itself for years for bridges on the State’s primary system outside municipal limits and in towns of under 3,500 population.
Some municipalities already make bridge inspections at least annually, but the new State-wide procedure is to assure that this is done uniformly in all localities. In a letter to municipal officials, L. O. Bolton, the Highway Department’s urban engineer, noted that the recent bridge disaster at Point Pleasant, W. Va., "has directed public attention to the safety of bridges throughout the couni try."
