Virginia's heir hi r vest jumped from list yeir’s r cord low to a comfortable total of 339 during the season just ended Came Commission Game Division Chief R. 11. Cross reports. Augusta County led the state with 49 bears followed closely by Rockingham where 47 were bagged. Botet ourt County ranked third with 25 reported kills and Bath County followed with 23. Seven bears wem reported from the Dismal Swamp portion of Nansemond County. The contrast between this year’s and last year’s kill is typical of the direct correlation between the abundance of mast and the resulting beatkill that has been noted by biologists over-the past decade or more. In the fall of 19(ib mast was almost nonexistent because of a killing frost ir late May of that year while last fall there was one of the best mast crops ever seen in Virginia’s mountains. Although there is I in le scientific evidence to back it up, thd popular theory is that in years when mast is scarce the bears go into hibernation early and are not available to the hunters, while in years when mast is abundant they rent tin active throughout the hunting season. According to Game Warden Irvin Kenyon, four bear were taken in Rappahanhock County.
