disabled between 24 and 31, you need credits for only half the time between age 21 and the time you became unable to work. If you are disabled before you reach age 24, you need only 1 1/2 years of work under social security out of a 3-year period ending when your disability began. Benefits under this new provision are first payable for the month of February 1968. About 100,000 people--disabled workers and their dependents are eligible. An esti mated $70 million in additional benefits will be paid out in the first 12 months. This new law could mean benefits even for some people who have recovered from their disabling condition, or if they were denied benefits previously because they lacked enough work credits.
