Va. Gets Increase in
School Food Fund
Virginia has been apportioned $6,173,587 for use in its school food service programs from the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Consumer and Marketing Service. This year’s apportionment is $374,603 more than last year, at 6.45 per cent increase.
These funds are to be used in providing help to Virginia schools that operate lunch, milk and breakfast programs. Although USDA funds make an appreciable dent in the expense of school food service programs, the children themselves pay for approximately 75 per cent of the cost with state, county and city governments contributing about 5 per cent. Virginia. and all other states receive these USDA funds under two separate acts--the National School Lunch Act and the Child Nutrition Act. The National School Lunch Act provides funds for schools taking part in the national school lunch program. A provision is also made under this act to give special assistance to schools in low-income areas that are not financially able to offer students the food service of the national school
