While the college student is spending money for his education, the apprentice is earning money. His beginning pay is about half of the journeyman’s 3cale, usually from $1.75 to' $3 an hour in most areas, depending on the trade. His earnings progress gradually every six months, until at the end of his apprenticeship, he attains the journeyman scale," which is generally from $3.50 to $6 an hour, depending on the occupation. To qualify for an apprentice ship, one must be a high school graduate and not over 24 years of age. Since selection and entrance requirements are quite demanding, the applicant should have an above average aptitude and physical fitness for the occupation he selects. Applications for apprenticeships may be made to an employer directly or to the local labor union in the trade selected. Another way to learn more about apprenticeship pro grams is to stop in at your local state employment officer or at a local office of the Division of Apprentice Training.
