The device used was an alpha scattering instrument housed in a gold-plated box. The instrument directed a stream 'of .atomic nuclei called alpha | particles at a small sample of I lunar material. The information conveyed to the instrument by backscattered alpha particles as well as protons from the sample enabled scierv tists on earth to identify certain elements and determine their amounts. Their tentative conclusion: preliminary findings indicate that the moon material is like volcanic material found On Earth. Apparently the same large-scale geologic processes were active on both. The actual origin of the moon, however, still remains one of science’s mysteries.
