February 26 is the date Virginia’s Division of Parks will start accepting applications for state park cabins.
The 1968 vacation cabin season will run from May 13 to September 30, announced Ben H. Bolen, commissioner of state parks in the Department of Conservation and Economic Development. All applications the division receives during the week of February 26 through March 1 will be given equal consideration, Bolen explained, and most if not all, reservations can be made according to the applicants’ choices of parks and weeks. After March 1, applications will be processed on a first-come firstserved basis, and in most cases alternate selections will be the only ones available. Applications from Virginia residents are the only requests the division will handle through March 10, and out-ofstate applications will be processed afterward, Bolen added.
Cabin reservations must be made on official application forms, the commissioner pointed out, and a new type of form is being used this year. The blanks are obtained from state park superintendents or from the Division of Parks, 501 Southern States Building, 7th and Main Streets, Richmond, Virginia 23219. The new form is a double post card which the applicant will seal together and mail to the division office, Bolen explained. After processing the request, the parksdivision will fill in the confirmation portion and mail it back to the applicant, who will return the confirmation card along with payment. During the 20-week cabin season, occupancy is limited to one week, but the rental may be extended to two weeks if the cabin is available. Bolen pointed out. Reservations begin and end on Mondays. The 150 cabins, in eight of Virginia’s state parks, are fully equipped for housekeeping, the commissioner said.
