The breakdown of this year’s kill compared to that of a year ago by checking station looks like this : Chester Gap; last year, no check station, this year 10: Flint Hill; last year 49, this year 42: Amissville, last year 5, this year 9: Washington; last year 74, this year 47: Sperryville; last year checked 184, this year 90. There is a difference in the kill of about 100 for the last day alone and that same 100, give or take a few, shows up in the Sperryville area.
While it is of interest to compare this year’s kill with that of the season before, ’69-70, we must remember that the ’69-’70 season was hardly an average year. In fact, that figure of 338 exceeded by about three times what could be considered an average deer kill in Rappahannock County. Though the big racks this year did not seem as plentiful as past years, the deer appeared to be in good condition. Game which is still in season includes rabbit, squirrel and grouse until January 31 and quail until February 15th.
