(Grass tetany was diagnosed in two beef cows in Rappahannock last week. As far as we can determine this was the first known case in the county. The following article was written several years ago by John Gerken, Ex-Clarke County Agent. By virture of both his field and laboratory experience with grass tetany, John is probably the most practically, knowledgable man in the state on the subject.)
Preventing Grass Tetany - “Late winter and early spring is the season when grass tetany usually occurs in beef cow herds. Because it often affects cows that are still on winter rations and before any grazing is present, it might be called “winter” tetany when it occurs under these conditions. The onset of the disturbance is rapid and losses are high so that prevention is most important.
