Names change. But, even if you change your name, you will still keep the same social security number. When a woman gets married, for instance, she should report her new name to any social security office. She will get a new card showing her new name, but the same number she had under her maiden. You’re never too young or too old to get a social security card. Social security numbers are issued to infants and centenarians. Some other Federal agencies also use the number. When you file your income tax return, for example, the Internal Revenue Service requires you to show your social security number for purposes of its Income Taxpayer Identification system.
And the U. S. Armed Forces recently decided to do away with their system of serial numbers and to use the social security number as a means of identification 0
