cows ip the first month or two after calving. Older cows seem to be more susceptible than first-calf heifers. A lower than normal supply of magnesium in the cow’s blood seems to result in tetany in susceptible cows. Low levels of magnesium in winter feed and early pasture grass plus a relative high requirement for milk production for the calf seem to be- the > factersr most responsible for bringing on tetany.

Losses can be high at times. In one herd in Clarke Coounty several years ago twelve cases' occurred in a herd of eighty cows. About half of the twelve died; the others responded to prompt veterinary treatment.

Prevention of tetany through the feeding of supplemental sources of magnesium has been effective. One of the best methods is provided by feeding magnesium oxide mixed with h salt during the critical period. The magnesium oxide should be mixed with salt in a 1: 1 ration and the mixture self-fed as the only source of salt. The supplement can also be mixed with grain and fed at the rate of 'A ounce of magnesium oxide per day as an alternate method. Commercial sources of feed-grade magnesium oxide are available that can provide the necessary material at a cost of five cents to ten cents per cow per month. Supplementation should begin when calving starts and should be continued until about June 1.”
