Federal matching funds in the amount of $12,742 have been awarded Virginia for use by the State Department of Education in expanding its program of driver education and driver improvement for adults and out of school youth and establishing one for prospective operators of motorcycles and emergency vehicles, John T. Hanna, Director of the Virginia Highway Safety Division, reported today. Hanna said that opportunities for adult and out of school youths to undergo approved driver education courses are very sparse throughout the State and that those for motorcycle, and emergency vehicle operation are just about non-existent. These would probably be the first comprehensive driver education programs encompassing such broad areas on a statewide basis.
He continued in saying that the new law setting the minimum driver licensing age at 18 but permitting licensing at 16 upon completion of a state approved driver education course works a hardship on out-of-school youths who do not have courses available to the extend of depriving them of certain employment opportunities involving driving.
