Force Reduction
A reduction in force affecting approximately 35 employees throughout Virginia was announced today by State Selective Service Director, Ernest D, Fears, jr.
The reduction here was part of a nationwide personnel cutback ordered by National Selective Service Headquarters to reduce expenditures and to reorganize the System to permit operation at this reduced scale. The System had to absorb extra costs even though its budget was held at last year’s spending level.
All of these changes reflect the System’s overall support of President Nixon’s pledge to the nation to lower draft calls and move towards elimination of the draft and the establishment of an all-volunteer force.
However, if directed by the President, Selective Service is prepared to resume any level of induction triggered by a national emergency.
Local reorganization plans require some Selective Service boards to collocate their operations. This has the advantage of increasing the number of hours collocated boards will be open to the public. The collocation of boards will eliminate some jobs but will result in increased efficiency paired with an overall cost savings to the taxpayer.
For the employees being released, the State Director, complying with the request of Selective Service Director Dr. Curtis W. Tarr, has initiated counseling and job information programs.
“I will not be satisfied until all of our former employees have found employment acceptable to them,” said Mr. Fears.
